Top 5 Fool Songs to celebrate April Fool’s Day

Unless you live on Mars, you will be very aware that April Fools’ Day (sometimes called All Fools’ Day) is celebrated every year on the 1st April by playing practical jokes and pranks on people.

The jokes and their victims are called April fools. People playing April Fool jokes expose their prank by shouting “April Fool”. It has become a tradition and custom for newspapers, magazines, and the broadcast media to report fake stories, which are usually revealed  at a later date.

april fools dayHowever the history and origins of April Fool’s Day or All Fool’s Day is less well known but it is widely believed that it began around 1582 in France with the reform of the calendar under Charles IX. The Gregorian Calendar was introduced, and New Year’s Day was moved from the 25th March – 1st April (new year’s week) to the 1st January.

In medieval times communication was a very slow process and many people only learned of the calendar change several years later. Still others, who were more rebellious refused to acknowledge the change and continued to celebrate on the last day of the former celebration, the 1st April.

These people were marked out and labelled as “fools” by the general population. They were subject to ridicule and sent on “fool errands,” sent invitations to non-existent parties and had other practical jokes played upon them. The butts of these jokes became known as a “poisson d’avril” or “April fish” because a young naive fish is easily caught. In addition, one common practice was to hook a paper fish on the back of someone as a joke.

This tradition of prank playing eventually spread to the UK and Scotland in the 18th century and was introduced to  America by the English and the French colonialists shortly thereafter. April Fool’s Day has subsequently been adopted on an international scale with many countries celebrating the 1st April in this eccentric, quirky way.
