As One Direction film tops charts, here’s a Top 10 Best Music Films

When One Direction arrived in Leicester Square in London’s West End for the premiere of their film “This Is Us”, they were greeted by a thronging mass of hysteria produced bt 70, 000 fans. But this nothing new!!

Boy bands like One Direction have trodden that well-worn path into Leicester Square to promote their film premieres since the 1960s, when the Beatles made two films “A Hard Day’s Night” and “Help” directed by Richard Lester in 1964 and 1965 respectively.

David Essex’s “That’ll be the Day” and its sequel “Stardust” in 1973 and 1974 depicted the corruption of the music industry with the meteoric rise and fall and destruction of a 1960s pop star played by David Essex. A similar theme was portrayed in “Slade in Flame”, where Noddy Holder and the boys played the roles of band members of a fictitious rock band called Flame, who were undermined by avarice and corruption within their record company and management. All three films were excellent, not least because David Essex and the Slade band members proved to be worthy actors, although in the case of the latter it has to be said they didn’t stray too far from real life!!

Other music films like the Rolling Stones “Gimme Shelter” and “Abba the Movie” were documentary based ( rockumentary ) rather than a fictional story. However the award for most surreal film has to go to Pete Townsend and The Who for “Tommy”. But the best music film has to be the satirical “This is Spinal Tap”, which is why it is No1 in this Record Press Top 10 Best Music Films –
