Radio Times celebrates its 90th Anniversary this year and along with a special exhibition, Radio Times is also running a poll to find out what are viewers all time favourite TV programmes.
Over the 90 years, Doctor Who has been the subject of more front cover features in the Radio Times than any other programme during the listings magazine’s long life. The Radio Times was first published in 1923 when radio was in its infancy and this landmark 90th anniversary is being celebrated with a free exhibition at the Museum of London. The displays feature many early Radio Times front covers, set in the context of the history of British broadcasting, from the BBC’s inaugural radio transmission from Alexandra Palace in London through to the modern multi-channel platform that the BBC has become in the 21st Century.
The Radio Times 90th anniversary exhibition also features a Doctor Who display, marking the Time Lord’s regular appearances in the magazine since 1964. As part of the display there is a life-size Dalek set against a backdrop of Westminster Bridge, recreating the famous 2005 “Vote Dalek” Radio Times cover ( which was voted the Cover of the Century by the Periodical Publishers Association ). Of course Doctor Who also celebrates a major milestone later this year, with its own landmark 50th anniversary in November.
Radio Times, which incidentally is the world’s longest running TV and radio listings magazine, is inviting the nation to vote for their all time favourite TV programmes, to create the ultimate night of TV as part of its 90th birthday celebrations. Over a six week period Radio Times readers will vote for their all time favourite TV shows in the following categories – children’s, entertainment, comedy, factual and drama programmes, as well as their favourite newscaster and the greatest TV moment ever ( which presumably will be the London 2012 Olympics Opening Ceremony!! ). The results of the poll will create the ultimate television schedule for the perfect night-in and will be announced in Radio Times 90th anniversary special issue on 24th September 2013.
It’s an invidious task trying to whittle down a long list to just one all time favourite TV programme in each category, but here goes……..After much “soul searching” the Record Press author’s all-time favourite TV shows in each respective category are “Land of the Giants” ( ITV ), “Top of the Pops” ( BBC ), “Fawlty Towers” ( BBC ), “Fourteen Days in May” ( BBC documentary about a condemned man’s last two weeks on Death Row ) and “I Claudius” ( BBC ).
