Brian Clemens, the legendary scriptwriter and producer behind the iconic cult TV series The Avengers, New Avengers, The Persuaders and The Professionals, has died aged 83.
Brian Clemens’ contribution to TV in the UK from the 1960s to 1980s was prodigious. His other TV credits included The Baron, The Protectors, Danger Man, The Invisible Man and Bergerac. His production companies created The New Avengers and The Professionals, while Brian Clemens also wrote for a number of US shows including Remington Steele, Perry Mason and the Highlander TV series.
He single handedly created the “TV Tapestry” for the Record Press author’s childhood. The Avengers was the first TV series that I engaged with between 1967 and 1969. The surreal plots / storylines captured the imagination of the five and six year old me, whilst the suave and urbane John Steed ( Patrick MacNee ) became my hero – only matched by the equally debonair Simon Templar ( Roger Moore ) in The Saint.
When The Avengers and The Saint came to an end in 1969, the void was briefly and belatedly filled for a season by The Persuaders, another adventure series showcasing international playboys Lord Brett Sinclair ( Roger Moore ) and Danny Wilde ( Tony Curtis ). Their wonderful on screen chemistry was sadly short lived as the The Persuaders only ran for one series from 1971 to 1972. The Protectors was supposed to fill the gap, but despite a star studded cast, headed by Robert Vaughan and Nyree Dawn Porter, the series lacked the charisma and panache of The Avengers and The Persuaders.
However Brian Clemens redeemed himself very quickly when he bounced backed with The Professionals in 1977, showcasing action men Bodie ( Lewis Collins ) and Doyle ( Martin Shaw ). Another favourite of mine was the Thriller series ( 1973 to 1976 ), with its twist in the tail tales and distinctive theme music.
