As Cliff Richard & Elvis team up here’s a Top 20 Best Duets

Cliff Richard is performing a “duet” with none other than the late Elvis Presley on his new album, albeit posthumously ( for Elvis not Cliff!! ).

Sir Cliff, 75, sings Blue Suede Shoes with the late Elvis Presley on his latest album release, Just… Fabulous Rock ‘n’ Roll which is to be released in November.cliff-richard

News of the forthcoming album comes days after the Crown Prosecution Service upheld a decision not to prosecute Cliff Richard over claims of historical sex offences. Sir Cliff, who always denied the allegations, said he was “pleased” with the decision and said he hoped the review “brings this matter to a close”.

Cliff Richard recorded the album in the Blackbird studio in Nashville, Tennessee, fulfilling his boyhood dream of a “duet” with Elvis Presley. The album also includes Cliff Richard’s rendition of songs recorded by his “heroes”, including Jerry Lee Lewis, Chuck Berry, Sam Cooke and John Lee Hooker. Tracks on the album include Roll Over Beethoven, Great Balls Of Fire and Sweet Little Sixteen, as well as a new, original track, cliff-richard-fabulous-rock-n-roll-imageIt’s Better To Dream, and Sir Cliff’s debut single Move It, first released in August 1958.

Cliff Richard commented that the album reflected “a happy, creative, and in many ways an innocent time”, adding: “Not only do I find it hard to believe that my career has spanned this length of time, but also that I still get the chance to do the thing I love best, and that is to get into a studio.”

This got the Record Press author musing over the greatest duets in pop and rock history. There really have been some classic duets, where the fusion of two vocals, especially male and female, have combined to create the perfect harmony. Most of the time it comes down to great chemistry between the two artists in the duet, although ironically the No1 in the following Record Press Top 20 Best Duets is an exception to the rule as Diana Ross and Marvin Gaye loathed each other so much, that their vocals were recorded separately!! However this does not stop “You Are Everything” being the perfect duet!!

Hull City of Culture to honour Bowie guitarist Mick Ronson

The life and times of David Bowie’s backing band, Spiders From Mars, guitarist Mick Ronson is to be celebrated in his home town as part of Hull’s City of Culture celebrations next year.mick-ronson

Turn and Face the Strange is a live show written by Rupert Creed and Garry Burnett, both of whom hail from Hull. The performance will include film, audio, storytelling and live music.

Mick Ronson grew up in Hull, where he formed the band that went on to become the Spiders From Mars, an integral part of David Bowie’s early success between 1970 and 1973 when they were his backing band. He died in 1993 aged 46 from liver cancer.

A spokesman for the project said Turn and Face the Strange would go “beneath the known narratives of Mick Ronson’s partnership with David Bowie and the Spiders from Mars”. He added: “It will tell the story of how a working class boy from Greatfield Estate came to challenge the norms and expectations of his time and place of origin, to play a pivotal role in creating a new music and social culture.”

Rupert Creed commented: “The project will engage and connect Hull residents from Greatfield Estate and across the city, recording and sharing audio stories and memories, personal photographs and memorabilia.” The performance will be accompanied by an exhibition of photographs and memorabilia at the Freedom Centre.

In the humble opinion of the Record Press author, Mick Ronson was one of the great unsung British rock guitarists. For me he is in a top five with Jimmy Page, Eric Clapton, Dave Gilmour and Keith Richards. I would even suggest that mick-ronson-2without Mick Ronson,  David Bowie’s ascent to stardom would have taken a slightly more circuitous, slower route  to the top: such is Mick Ronson’s influence on the David Bowie 1971 album Hunky Dory and his seminal album The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust in 1972.

As well as working with David Bowie, Mick Ronson recorded several solo albums, the most successful of which was Slaughter on 10th Avenue, which reached No9 on the UK album chart. He also played on, produced or arranged songs for artists including Lou Reed ( co producing the Transformer album & the song Perfect Day ), Bob Dylan and Morrissey.

However as his epitaph, as far as I am concerned The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust has to be Mick Ronson’s finest hour…….

Zayn Malik to publish an autobiography with the very original title Zayn!!

Zayn Malik is publishing an autobiography at the tender age of 23:  hardly old enough for his memoirs, the Record Press author thinks!!

Penguin Random House has confirmed that the “first autobiography” by Zayn Malik, entitled somewhat originally “Zayn”, will be published worldwide on the 1st November. Instead of a written narrative, the book will feature his zayn-malikthoughts, drawings and personal photographs……It occurs to the Record Press author that this is probably due to one of two reasons – either Zayn Malik is unable to write or more likely, he has little to write about!!

Zayn Malik has been conspicuous by his absence in terms of his public statements since leaving One Direction, but clearly that is all about to change with the release of his autobiography “Zayn” in November.

Top 10 Madness & Specials songs as a Prince Buster tribute

The ska pioneer Prince Buster, who shaped the course of Jamaican music, has died at his home in Miami at the age of 78.

Like most of the reggae and ska pioneers, Prince Buster was born in Kingston, Jamaica. He became a centrepiece and prince-buster-imagelegend of the burgeoning ska music genre in 1960s Jamaica. According to the BBC, the decision by Prince Buster to use a syncopated beat on tracks such as Little Honey, They Got to Go and Thirty Pieces of Silver is credited as pivotal and the launchpad in ska music’s development and as a result Prince Buster gave himself the moniker “King of Ska”.

The Record Press author was too young to embrace Prince Buster, but not too young to love his protegees Madness and The Specials in the British ska revival of the late 1970s. Prince Buster inspired Madness and The Specials and those  bands inspired my generation, so quid pro quo Prince Buster inspired me and my mates!!

Teenagers invited to premiere Busted stage musical

Pop band Busted have invited teenagers to a theatre summer school to premiere their new jukebox musical, before it is performed in the West End.

Busted guitarist James Bourne has co-written the musical What I Go To School For about the group’s rise to fame and fortune. The first performances will be staged by around 40 members of Youth Music Theatre (YMT) in Brighton this weekend.busted

James Bourne, who recently reformed Busted, explained: “Our aim is to try and create a show that can last forever.” The musical will showcase songs like Air Hostess, Crashed the Wedding and Year 3000, which were among the eight singles Busted released between 2002-04, all reaching the top three in the UK.

James Bourne has written the show with collaborator Elliot Davis. The pair’s first musical was Loserville, which was staged by YMT in 2009 before going on to the West End and being nominated for an Olivier Award. According to Bourne: “The show quite accurately tells the story of the band from 2001 to 2005, though some characters are real and some characters are made-up versions of real people. Eventually it would be nice to open in the West End after we’ve had more time to develop.”

As well as working on the musical, James Bourne has been back in the recording studio with Busted after a break of 10 years, with a new Busted album due for release later this year.

Pink Floyd become national relics with V & A exhibition

You know when you are an intrinsic part of the national cultural fabric when you become the focus of an exhibition at the Victoria & Albert Museum. On that basis Pink Floyd have truly arrived as a venerable British institution, finally embodying the title of their 1971 album Relics.

Formed in 1965, Pink Floyd featured lead vocalist and guitarist Syd Barrett, bassist Roger Waters, drummer Nick pink floyd vegetable men 1967Mason and keyboard player Rick Wright. Guitarist David Gilmour joined shortly before Syd Barrett’s departure in 1968. Syd Barrett and Rick Wright died in 2006 and 2008 respectively.

The Pink Floyd exhibition will also pay homage to the genius of Syd Barrett, who become a casualty of the late-1960s fascination with LSD. The Dark Side of the Moon is believed to have been partly inspired by Syd Barrett’s mental-health struggles with the follow up album Wish You Were Here chronicling the fall out of his demise on the band.

Some of the ground work for the V&A show has already been done. In 2014, a Pink Floyd retrospective organised by one of Italy’s biggest music promoters was abandoned following a reported dispute over fees and intellectual property rights. A worldwide tour of hundreds of exhibits, including designs and recordings, had been planned. A giant inflatable pig, featured on the cover of Animals, and the stage sculpture of The Wall are among artefacts that are now likely to come to the V&A instead.

Drake fails to beat Bryan Adams record for longest time at UK No 1

Bryan Adams has retained his UK record for the most consecutive weeks at No1, after Drake was finally dislodged from the top of the UK singles chart, a week shy of equalling the record.

The Drake song One Dance has dropped to No5, replaced at No1 by the Justin Bieber single Cold Water. Justin Bieber’s drakesong is a collaboration with dance acts Major Lazer and MØ, whose 2015 hit Lean On is Spotify’s most-streamed song of all time. Cold Water by Justin Bieber has accrued up to 102,000 combined sales (comprising 47,000 downloads and 5.6 million streams) which is almost double the number Drake achieved last week, in his fifteenth and final week at No1.

So Bryan Adams’ Everything I Do (I Do It For You) remains the UK’s longest-running No1, having spent 16 weeks at the top of the charts in 1991. Ultimately, the Drake ditty proved no match for the Bryan Adams anthem, soundtrack to the 1991 film Robin Hood: Prince Of Thieves, which Bryan Adams wrote with co-writer Mutt Lange in less than 45 minutes.

At the time Bryan Adams said: “It was a moment that I’ve only felt a few times. It’s the moment when you know it’s a Bryan Adamsgood song, you don’t know if it’s a hit, you just know it’s good.” But if the song’s longevity at No1 was tedious in the UK, we had a lucky escape!! In Bryan Adams’ home country of Canada the song remained at No1 for 39 weeks.

Of course there is a real irony that hasn’t escaped the Record Press author – Bryan Adam’s No1 record was  preserved by a fellow Canadian, Justin Bieber!! Clearly a Canadian conspiracy!!

Can you believe Pink Floyd are to release a 27 disc box set?!

Pink Floyd have announced the imminent release of a new box set, The Early Years 1965-1972, which will comprise 27 discs – both CDs and DVD/Blu-ray discs.

Pink Floyd: The Early Years 1965-1972 will contain seven hours of previously unreleased live audio, and more than 15 hours of video. The Record Press author is a big fan of Pink Floyd but it strikes me that this massive box set is one for the anoraks – if you laid all the components of the box set out end to end they would stretch around the circumference of the world twice!!

Joking aside this is a must for Pink Floyd fans, for the amount of unreleased material included. For the first time, the pink floyd vegetable men 1967much-bootlegged Syd Barrett-era songs Vegetable Man and Scream Thy Last Scream get an official release. Arguably more exciting for Pink Floyd fans is the release of what has been described on message boards as “the most obscure Pink Floyd recording of all” and “the Floyd holy grail”.

The Pink Floyd holy grail is the eight tracks the Sud Barrett-era band recorded for the film-maker John Latham on 20th October 1967 in London, but which he decided not to use in his short film Speak. It is believed that these tracks have never been bootlegged.

Another collector’s item is the release of In the Beechwoods, a Syd Barrett song recorded at the same time as Jugband Blues, from the second Pink Floyd album A Saucerful of Secrets, which has previously surfaced in low-quality abridged form.

The box set also comes replete with the inevitable posters, pictures and replica 7″ vinyl singles.

If you are not a millionaire and can’t afford a 27-disc set, you can settle for a 2CD highlights compilation. Needless to say, that does not feature Vegetable Man or Scream Thy Last Scream, or the John Latham session. So if you’re serious about the Syd Barrett era, I’m afraid you will have to buy the complete box set.framed pink floyd vinyl single image

As an alternative to the box set, you can order your favourite Pink Floyd song as a framed and mounted 7″ vinyl single. If it’s intended as a gift, you can also personalise it with an inscribed / engraved plaque…… ORDER NOW…….. www.myfirstrecord.co.uk/

David Bowie musical Lazarus to open in London

Lazarus, the uncannily named stage musical showcasing the songs of David Bowie, is to open in London this autumn after a successful run in New York.

Inspired by the book, The Man Who Fell To Earth, the show premiered last November in the New York Theatre, just a matter of weeks before David Bowie’s death in January of this year.David Bowie musical Lazarus 2

David Bowie co-wrote Lazarus with Irish playwright Enda Walsh, the award-winning writer of Once. The London production will run at the Kings Cross Theatre from 25th October to 22nd January 2017.

Reprising their roles from the original New York production are Michael C Hall, who starred in hit TV series Dexter, Michael Esper and Sophia Anne Caruso.

Lazarus recounts the story of a human-looking alien who comes to Earth. The production has real pedigree, directed by Ivo van Hove the Belgian director behind the acclaimed A View From the Bridge, starring Mark Strong, which ran in London and New York.

When it opened in New York, The Guardian described Lazarus as “unapologetically weird… and oddly intriguing” whilst Rolling Stone summarised the show as a “surrealistic tour de force.”

Unreleased David Bowie album The Gouster available soon

A previously unreleased David Bowie album is soon to be released.

The Gouster, recorded in 1974, was David Bowie’s experiment in soul and funk, which later evolved into Young Americans, released in 1975. It will be released later this year in a box set, Who Can I Be Now? (1974-1976).

The new David Bowie album release was announced via Bowie’s official Facebook page, which also printed an excerpt from the sleeve notes, written by David Bowie’s go to producer Tony Visconti. Tony Visconti wrote:David Bowie Young Americans era

“Gouster was a word unfamiliar to me but David knew it as a type of dress code worn by African American teens in the 60s, in Chicago. But in the context of the album its meaning was attitude, an attitude of pride and hipness. Of all the songs we cut, we were enamoured of the ones we chose for the album that portrayed this attitude.

David had a long infatuation with soul, as did I. We were fans of the TV show Soul Train. We weren’t ‘young, gifted and black’ but we sure as hell wanted to make a killer soul album, which was quite insane, but pioneers like the Righteous Brothers were there before us.

So The Gouster began with the outrageous, brand new, funkified version of David’s classic John, I’m Only Dancing, a single he wrote and recorded in 1972, only this time our version sounded like it was played live The Gousterin a loft party in Harlem and he added (Again) to the title. It wasn’t the two-and-a-half-minute length of the original either.

We maxed out at virtually seven minutes! With the time limitations of vinyl (there was a big volume drop with more than 18 minutes a side), we could only fit two other long songs on side one, Somebody Up There Likes Me and It’s Gonna Be Me, both about six and a half minute songs. We had hit the 20-minute mark. Technically that worked because It’s Gonna Be Me had lots of quiet sections where the record groove could be safely made narrower and that would preserve the apparent loudness of side one.

Side two also hit the 20-minute mark, with Can You Hear Me saving the day with its quiet passages. Forty minutes of glorious funk, that’s what it was and that’s how I thought it would be.”

Great news for all David Bowie fans. I for one cannot wait for its release…….

Led Zeppelin to release BBC Sessions compilation

A Led Zeppelin session for the BBC from 1969 that was believed to have been lost when archives were erased has been recovered from a recording made by a fan.

The Led Zeppelin set went out on the BBC World Service as part of Alexis Korner’s Rhythm and Blues programme and was tape recorded from an AM radio in Europe. It includes the band’s only known recording of the track Sunshine jimmy page & robert plantWoman and two other unreleased tracks I Can’t Quit You Baby and What Is And What Should Never Be.

The Led Zeppelin session recording has been restored with help from guitarist Jimmy Page for inclusion on a new compilation. The Complete BBC Sessions, which will be released in September, is a remastered update of a 1997 collection of tracks recorded for the BBC between 1969 and 1971. Arguably it includes eight previously unreleased recordings, including the first broadcast of Stairway To Heaven ( from the BBC Paris Cinema in London on 1 April 1971 ) but in reality, it is only three tracks that are technically unreleased.

As much as I’m a Led Zeppelin fan, I cannot help feeling that despite the inclusion of three previously unreleased tracks, the new 3 CD or 5 vinyl LP “deluxe edition” box set will cost a lot of money for predominantly old rope. Much better to have released them as a three track EP in a vinyl single or CD single format. However no doubt dedicated, purist Led Zeppelin fans will want to add this latest release to their collection.

Is streaming artists like Drake devaluing the UK singles chart?

Fewer records than ever before are entering the UK top 40 as fans keep streaming the same songs over and over again.

This Friday, Drake registered a 14th week at No1 in the UK singles chart – but the reality is the No1 song One Dance by Drake isn’t the best-selling record of the last seven days. It doesn’t even figure in the top 10!!

In fact the Drake single only topped the sales-only chart in the first three weeks of its No1 tenure. It’s only the inclusion of drakestreaming data (where 100 plays count as one sale) that has given him the the No1 spot. And that’s something that’s starting to worry the music industry, because now that the charts measure consumption rather than purchases, they have practically ground to a halt.

In the first six months of 2016, there were 86 new entries in the UK singles chart. Ten years ago, that figure was 230.

Harry Magee, who manages One Direction and Little Mix, comments: “I think it’s a problem. There’s been a lot of talk about how hard it is to break a new act at the minute – and it certainly is. It’s harder for artists and it’s harder for the industry. It’s a problem we’re still getting our heads around.”

Radio 1’s head of music, Chris Price, is also very concerned: “We’re asking serious questions because, as a new music station, we have to keep pushing the agenda forward. So we’re even having to ask whether we keep Drake on the playlist. It would be, I think, unprecedented to take the number one record off the Radio 1 playlist. It didn’t happen with Bryan Adams… but we’ve got new music to break. We’ve got to satisfy our listeners’ impatience to hear new music.”

If you are becoming a little bored with Drake at No1 and the invisible download / streaming in general, how about ordering your favourite song in a physical format as a framed vinyl single?. Secret David Bowie art collection unveiled for the first time

The private art collection of David Bowie is to be revealed to the public for the first time.

Art collecting was something David Bowie kept as a secret during his lifetime. But now, nearly 300 works by artists including Damien Hirst, Henry Moore and Marcel Duchamp will go on display at Sotheby’s in London, before being sold at auction in November.

The works of art are collectively expected to generate more than £10million. Most of the works are by 20th Century British artists, with pictures by Stanley Spencer, Patrick Caulfield and Peter Lanyon.

Born and raised in South London, David Bowie was also drawn to chroniclers of the capital’s streets such as Leon Kossoff and Frank Auerbach. In 1998 Bowie told the New York Times, “My God, yeah – I want to sound like that looks,” david bowie secretin response to the work of Auerbach.

Oliver Barker, chairman of Sotheby’s Europe, summarised: “David Bowie’s collection offers a unique insight into the personal world of one of the 20th Century’s greatest creative spirits.” The artist and writer Matthew Collings says the collection reflected Bowie’s personality, commenting: “I would characterise it as bohemian, romantic, expressive, emotional art. Art that’s filled with feelings,” he said, adding it was “vivid and exciting” and was “art that calls for a gut reaction, that’s visceral, that’s immediate, that you feel excited by straight away”.

David Bowie informed the BBC in 1999: “The only thing I buy obsessively and addictively is art. Very little had been known about his life as an art collector. David Bowie did not buy on the basis of reputation or for investment, but was motivated by taste and his own personal response to each artist and their work.

As well as 267 paintings, more than 120 items of 20th Century furniture and sculpture from David Bowie’s collection will also be auctioned. Among them, a striking 1960s stereo cabinet created by the Italian designers Achille and Pier Giacomo Castiglioni.framed david bowie record

The Top 60 chart is part of the Official Chart Company’s month-long anniversary celebrations. The first ever chart was published in the Record Mirror on the 22nd July 1956, and featured Frank Sinatra’s Songs for Swingin’ Lovers in the top spot.abba gold
Martin Talbot, chief executive of Official Charts commented: “In celebration of 60 years of the UK’s official album chart, it is fantastic that we can crown Queen as the kings of the anniversary Top 60. With seven albums by British acts in the all-time Top 10, and Adele’s 21 now challenging the Beatles’ Sgt Pepper to be the biggest-selling studio album of all time, it is a great list for home-grown talent. And the fact that Adele’s latest album 25 is riding into the overall Top 30, along with Ed Sheeran’s X, underlines the power of the official albums chart in championing great British talent, young and old.”

Which 1980s male solo act would you like to see return?

1980s pop star Rick Astley has returned to the top of the UK album chart after an interval of 29 years.

The Rick Astley comeback album, 50, beat new releases by Tom Odell, Paul McCartney, ELO and Drake to take the No1 spot. Rick commented: “It’s amazing, it’s incredible. It’s been a very, very, very long time.”rick astley

Rick Astley was an integral part of the Stock, Aitken, Waterman hit factory in the late 1980s and the Record Press author was not a fan. Although I recognised his undoubted talent and the quality of his vocals, I detested the songs Pete Waterman foisted upon him in the name of commercial “art”!! However 30 years on Rick Astley has finally arrived, fulfilling his potential and promise, with new material of a much more mature, thoughtful and soulful sound as you might expect of a middle aged man!!

Rick Astley has been in a fierce battle for the number one slot over the last week, changing places with Tom Odell on several occasions. In the end, he outsold the Tom Odell by 3,700 copies. According to the Official Chart Company, Rick Astley sold more physical CDs, while Tom Odell secured more digital sales and streams.

Rick Astley joked: “I like Tom Odell. I bought his last album, and I’m going to buy this one as well, but I’ve held off from buying it this week!” To put his achievement into perspective, Rick Astley last topped the chart in 1987, three paul youngyears before Tom Odell was born, with his debut album Never Gonna Give You Up.

Rick Astley added: “Elton John’s sent a few texts over the last couple of days and just called me now to celebrate and said ‘just make sure you enjoy it. He’s one of those people I’ve always respected… so it was a nice moment to get that congratulations.”

I know many of you loved Rick Astley in the 1980s and with better song choices I would have been a member of his fan club. In terms of a 1980s white solo singer with a velvety soulful voice, my choice would have to be Paul Young. He had the voice and backed it up with great songs like Wherever I Lay My Hat (That’s My Home), Love of the Common People and Love Will Tear Us Apart. My favourite Paul Young songs have to be Come Back and Stay, I’m Gonna Tear Your Playhouse Down and Everytime You Go Away.

Led Zeppelin deny Stairway to Heaven is a stair-lift

Led Zeppelin guitarist Jimmy Page has testified in a US court that that he had not heard a song until recently that he’s accused of plagiarising when writing Stairway to Heaven.

Jimmy Page acknowledged that he had three Spirit albums in his collection of some 10,000 record albums and CDs. But Jimmy Page said he only discovered he possessed Spirit’s first album, which contained Taurus, a few years ago after his son-in-law told him that comparisons with Stairway to Heaven were cropping up online.

Jimmy Page acknowledged that Led Zeppelin used a riff from another Spirit song in a medley during their first tour in Scandinavia but Jimmy Page insisted he’d heard it on the radio – and never heard Taurus.

In his testimony, Andes explained Spirit played Taurus in 1968 at a Denver show where Led ledZeppelinStairwayToHeavenZeppelin was the opening act, and that in 1970 he and Led Zeppelin singer Robert Plant drank beer and played snooker after a Spirit show in Birmingham, England.

US district judge R Gary Klausner ruled in April that evidence presented in hearings made a credible case that Led Zeppelin may have heard Taurus performed before their song was created.

Robert Plant and bandmate John Paul Jones are expected to testify at the trial, though Jones has been dismissed as a defendant in the case.

Led Zeppelin has settled several similar copyright disputes over songs such as Whole Lotta Love and Dazed and Confused, but the judge has barred a lawyer for the late Spirit guitarist from introducing evidence from those cases.

David Bowie masked ball at Isle of Wight festival

Music fans wore David Bowie masks at the Isle of Wight festival, the first of a series of tributes to the late singer at outdoor music events and festivals throughout the UK this summer.

David Bowie’s last festival appearance was at the Isle of Wight in 2004. He died in January after a battle with cancer.David Bowie – Young Americans

The tribute on Saturday was organised by Stand Up to Cancer, a joint fundraising campaign by Cancer Research UK and Channel 4, which is the Isle of Wight festival’s official charity partner for 2016.

The festival’s chief, John Giddings, commented: “David was a true musical icon, an immense talent who as a performer was incredible. His energy, creativity and passion were incomparable and I feel very lucky to have spent so many years working with him.”

He added: “His set at the Isle of Wight festival in 2004 was one of the highlights of my career, and sadly his last UK festival show. I was hoping he’d play this year so our tribute will be a very emotional moment for me.”

Tonight Rod is the Knight……

After a seeming eternity, Rod Stewart has finally been knighted in the Queen’s 90th Birthday Honours list.

The 71-year-old rock star who was awarded a CBE in 2007, has been honoured for his music rod stewartand charity work. But you don’t simply get a knighthood for being able to sing and giving time to philanthropic and altruistic causes. Longevity is a key ingredient – hence we have Sir Paul McCartney, Sir Mick Jagger and Sir Elton John and not Sir Ed Sheeran, Sir James Bay and Sir George Ezra.

Rod Stewart has survived for nearly 50 years in a rock and pop music landscape, scattered with the corpses and casualties of self-destructive souls who foundered on the rocks of drink and drugs. And the reason Rod Stewart has survived unscathed, is that he is a remarkably uncomplicated, straight forward man. As a younger man and rock star, he quite naturally had a penchant for beautiful women, epitomised by his torrid relationship with Britt Ekland, and it’s fair to say that he was more focused on philandering than philanthropy in those early years. But for the past twenty five years, beyond a few beers his life is a clean and healthy one.

The overriding reason for Rod Stewart’s success over five decades is that he is a fantastic vocalist androd stewart & britt ekland songwriter, who served a long apprenticeship from his early years as a beatnik and mod and on through arguably his best period, with his short lived blues collaboration with Long John Baldry and the Jeff Beck Group and onto the Faces years, where in tandem with their legendary hell raising and partying, the band produced some sublime songs.

Post The Faces, Rod Stewart’s early solo work between 1975 and 1977 was excellent before he fell foul to the disco era and the 1980s, the decade that taste, style and sophistication  forgot. But then who didn’t come unstuck in that decade – just look at Elton John’s mediocre output in the 1980s!! After a period recording classic standards, Rod Stewart has recently recorded his first album of his own songs in 20 years, called “Can’t Stop Me Now”. Many of the tracks are excellent, but for now let’s reflect on his back catalogue, with this Record Press Top 10 Best Rod Stewart Songs

Ian Dury was so much more than Sex & Drugs & Rock & Roll

Andy Serkis absolutely nailed Ian Dury in the 2010 biopic film, Sex & Drugs & Rock & Roll.

Not only did Andy Serkis look like Ian Dury, but he captured his abrasive, mercurial and tortured soul, borne out the bitterness and frustration that the artist understandably felt as a result of contracting polio as a boy. All those frustrations with being a cripple bubbled up to the surface in Ian Dury and the The Blockheads’ first hit single “What a Waste” and set the tone for all the music that was to come.

What Andy Serkis’ portrayal of Ian Dury succeeded in doing, was to remind us not only of the man’s ian durygreat talent as a songwriter and charismatic frontman, but also what a flawed, complex character he was as a father and a lover. As much as he was angst ridden, belligerent, abrasive and anarchical; he was also kind, caring, compassionate, sensitive and vulnerable. In truth the latter attributes were generally well concealed in Ian Dury’s songs, but what was never concealed was his innate ability as a storyteller. At the end of the 1970s, Ian Dury was almost peerless when it came to being a raconteur and storyteller in the music world – probably only equalled by the Jam’s Paul Weller and Chris Difford and Glenn Tilbrook of Squeeze.

Ian Dury was a tempestuous tour de force, who burned brightly, but sadly for too short a time. The Record Press author considers himself privileged to have seen Ian Dury & The Blockheads live………I can even remember the date and place………It was Sunday 9th August 1992 at Finsbury Park, North London…….Ian Dury and the band were supporting Madness at the first ”Madstock” concert. I wouldn’t say that Ian Dury & The Blockheads stole the show, but they certainly were not eclipsed by headliners Madness!!

Lest we forget Ian Dury & The Blockheads’ anarchical brilliance and wit, here is the Record Press Top 10 Best Ian Dury & The Blockheads songs –

David Bowie vinyl album breaks Discogs price record

An original vinyl copy of the David Bowie second album has become the most expensive vinyl record ever sold on the record collectors’ site Discogs.

bowie discogs albumThe original vinyl UK pressing of the 1969 album David Bowie, which was later retitled Space Oddity, sold for £4,722, beating the record set in 2015 by Chung King Can Suck It, a limited-edition 12in by the New York band Judge, a copy of which sold for £4,183.

Ron Rich, Discog’s marketing director indicated that the high price unsurprisingly is related to the death of David Bowie earlier this year, stating: “As morbid as it sounds, there is usually a bump in sales in the marketplace for a given artist when they pass. Collectors look to grab that piece of history, they want to own that a piece of the story. There are a finite number of that album and even fewer that were released under the title David Bowie – find one in good condition and you can relive that moment when you first listened to it. It’s tough to put a monetary value on that.”

David Bowie & Prince tributes planned for Glastonbury

Glastonbury’s Pyramid Stage will be decorated with a giant lightning bolt in tribute to David Bowie, organiser Emily Eavis has informed the BBC.

The metal sculpture, inspired by the sleeve for the David Bowie Aladdin Sane album, will hang above headline actsdavid bowie heroes Coldplay and Adele when they play the stage in June. The Park Stage will also host a performance of Philip Glass’s Symphony No 4, based on the David Bowie Heroes album.

Emily Eavis also confirmed plans were underway for a Prince tribute. Prince, who died last month at the age of 57, had long been rumoured as a potential headliner at the Glastonbury festival. Emily Eavis confirmed his appearance had been “close to happening for three years” and called his death “a huge loss to music”. David Bowie had performed on several occasions going back as far as the inaugural Glastonbury festival in 1971.

Radio 1 & Radio 2 appear to favour Brexit campaign!!

The BBC is to re-define its national music output on Radio 1 and Radio 2 to focus on emerging home grown talent rather than imported music from abroad.

At the moment half of the top tier of the Radio 1 playlist ( i.e. the songs it plays the most ) is made up of overseas radio 1 logoartists. Current and regular Radio 1 acts from the North American region ( US & Canada ) include Taylor Swift, Justin Bieber, The Weeknd and Beyoncé. Favourite UK acts on the Radio 1 playlist includes Ed Sheeran, Ellie Goulding, Skepta and Calvin Harris.

The BBC announced it would have more new homegrown talent on Radio 1 and Radio 2 as part of a robust defence of the distinctiveness of the two stations published last week, saying around 90% of their music output was not played on any other station.

A review document said the BBC would “ensure that Radio 1 and Radio 2 have a strong commitment to new and UK music so that a strong proportion of the new music in daytime on Radio 1 and Radio 2 should be from the UK”. Radio BBC-Radio-2-logo1’s 15-strong ‘A list’ currently includes six American and six British acts, two from Australia and one from Canada. Radio 2 is more homegrown, with more than half of its ‘A list’ acts from the UK.

A BBC spokesman said: “The BBC has never had such an important role in supporting new British music and this new commitment reflects the importance we place on bringing our audiences the best British acts.”

Whether you are a Radio 1 listener who consumes most of your music via digital download or an older Radio 2 listener who still buys CDs, you can still enjoy the charm of the iconic vinyl record, whether to be played or as home décor……

Billy Paul will be best remembered for his fling with Mrs Jones

Billy Paul, the soul singer best known for the Philadelphia soul classic, Me and Mrs Jones, has died aged 80.

A statement on his website said he died on Sunday of a “serious medical condition”. The NME music magazine has reported that this was pancreatic cancer.billy paul me & mrs jones vinyl single cover

Billy Paul, who was born as Paul Williams in Philadelphia, helped shape the course of modern R&B music. In his youth, he performed alongside soul legends including Charlie Parker and Nina Simone.

Later on Billy Paul was one of many soul singers who found success with the writing and production team of Kenneth Gamble and Leon Huff at their music stable Philadelphia International Records along with thoroughbreds the O’Jays, Harold Melvin & the Blue Notes, Three Degrees, Archie Bell & The Drells, The Intruders and Lou Rawls to name but a few.

In 2003, Billy Paul won £250,534 lawsuit for royalties owed for the song Me and Mrs Jones from 1994 to 2002 by Assorted Music. The company claimed it was an accounting discrepancy and not a case of trying to rip off Billy Paul.

Although Billy Paul will be best remembered for his 1972 hit Me and Mrs Jones, which won a Grammy award and reached No12 in the UK and No1 number in the US, there were other classics recalled in this Top 5 Best Billy Paul Songs –

Michael Jackson or Prince fan? Which are you?

For music fans in the 1980s & 1990s, you were either a Michael Jackson fan or a Prince fan. You couldn’t really be both and it really was a case of “Never the twain shall meet”!!

For the Record Press author it wasn’t a difficult decision – I fell easily into the Prince camp, culminating in seeing him in concert princeat Olympia, Earls Court in London in 1992. It’s a night that will stay with me thanks to the brilliance of Prince and the fact that I took as my guest the daughter of a Texan oil millionaire who had taken a real shine to me.

Sadly I let the millionairess from Austin, Texas slip through my fingers and have led a life of relative poverty since. However I never let Prince go……

As much as I admired and respected Michael Jackson, and nobody in their right mind would dismiss his vocal and dancing prowess as an all round performer, Prince was the man. Michael Jackson was too camp and feminine; Prince prince purple rain vinyl single coverwhilst being androgynous had a grittiness about him. Prince was a contradiction certainly but his music wasn’t.

Prince’s music was much more edgy and gritty; the music of Michael Jackson whilst very sophisticated lacked political punch with the exception of the dreadful Earth Song. Prince songs often had a social comment; sadness and sleaze often dressed up in a floral flourish but there was a message unmistakeably.

I’m not asking you decide between “Jacko” and Prince. That would be invidious. In some ways it’s hard to differentiate between as they shared many character similarities – both were shy, socially awkward, eccentric recluses. And undoubtedly both were musical geniuses.

However on the occasion of his death, let’s remember the genius of Prince with this Top 5 Best Prince Songs –

Was 1971 a golden year for pop & rock music?

There’s a new book out that suggests that 1971 was the best and definitive year for music in the 1970s: 1971 – Never a Dull Moment: Rock’s Golden Year by David Hepworth.

Goodreads.com rates it very highly in its review: “A rollicking look at 1971 – the busiest, most innovative and resonant year of the 70s, defined by the musical arrival of such stars as David Bowie, Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin, and Joni david hepworth book never a dull momentMitchell.”

The review continues: “On New Year’s Eve, 1970, Paul McCartney told his lawyers to issue the writ at the High Court in London, effectively ending The Beatles. You might say this was the last day of the pop era. The following day, which was a Friday, was 1971. You might say this was the first day of the rock era. And within the remaining 364 days of this monumental year, the world would hear Don McLean’s “American Pie,” The Rolling Stones’ “Brown Sugar,” The Who’s “Baba O’Riley,” Zeppelin’s “Stairway to Heaven,” Rod Stewart’s “Maggie May,” Marvin Gaye’s “What’s Going On,” and more.”

David Hepworth, author of “1971 – Never a Dull Moment: Rock’s Golden Year”……was twenty-one in 1971, the same age as many of the legendary artists who arrived on the scene. In the book he takes the reader on “a tour of the major moments, the events and songs of this remarkable year, he shows how musicians came together to form the perfect storm of rock and roll greatness, starting a musical era that would last longer than anyone predicted.”

Goodreads.com concludes its review: “1971 – Never a Dull Moment is more than a love song to the music of 1971. It’s also an homage to the things that inspired art and artists alike. From Soul Train to The Godfather, hot pants to table tennis, Hepworth explores both the music and its landscapes, culminating in an epic story of rock and roll’s best year.”

For the Record Press author, 1971 will always be synonymous with my childhood. It was the year that the Raleigh 1970s 1 munch bunch pencil topsChopper and its junior version the Raleigh Chipper were launched and revolutionised transportation for my friends and I. In the school playground the Munch Bunch pencil tops were all the rage. For those of a certain vintage who are struggling to remember them – they were the fruit and vegetable people who were impaled on our pencils in the classroom!!

My favourite TV shows were Catweazle, Land of the Giants, Banana Splits and The Persuaders. I have to say I hadn’t discovered pop and rock music at the time. Retrospectively I have developed a fondness for the music of 1971, without being overly enamoured with the year as a musical chapter. So I have to disagree with David Hepworth – I would opt  for 1974, 1975 ( years where  Glam Rock collided colourfully with the advent of Disco ) or 1979 ( where New Wave, Electro-pop, Reggae and Ska co-existed in the UK charts ) as being better years for music in the 1970s.

However 1971 produced some classic songs and hits as illustrated by this Record Press Top 10 Best Songs of 1971 –

Music streaming drives sales of vinyl records

Music streaming sites are helping to drive sales of vinyl, according to new research.

Half of consumers in the ICM survey say they have listened to an album online before buying a vinyl copy. This behavioural pattern is more commonplace for people who use ad-funded services such as SoundCloud or YouTube, Vinyl recordsuggesting free music can drive physical sales.

Interestingly though 48% of people who bought vinyl records last month admit they have yet to play it and 7% of those polled admitted that they do not even own a turntable. Jordan Katende, a student in Manchester, told the BBC: “I have vinyls in my room but it’s more for decor. I don’t actually play them. It gives me the old-school vibe. That’s what vinyl’s all about.”

Others say they buy records to support their favourite artists, while 50% of consumers identify themselves as “collectors”. Helena, an 18-year-old from Kingston, who has started using her father’s old record player admitted: “It’s really nice to have an object that you can hold and physically play. I also think it’s important to support artists financially if you can. I like it if someone puts effort into making a release look special.”

The renaissance in vinyl record purchasing during a period of declining sales has been one of the music industry’s more surprising success stories. In 2014, 2.1 million LPs were purchased by music fans as demand increased for an eighth successive year – climbing 64% to a 21-year high. Official Charts Company figures suggest the rise has continued in 2016, with 637,056 vinyl records sold in the first three months of the year, accounting for almost 3% of the UK music market.

Simon Sterland, Record Press Blog author and owner of online framed vinyl record gift retailer MyFirstRecord.co.uk, framed oasis vinyl singleendorses the ICM poll findings: “Vinyl record sales are extremely buoyant. These survey findings are comprehensive proof, if it were needed, that there is a growing customer base for physical copies of music in a technology driven world.”

He continues: “I can only see this trend for vinyl record buying continuing as the music download is no substitute for the tactility of the vinyl single or album, not to mention the decorative album cover artwork. Vinyl has a personality all of its own. The re-emergence of vinyl is mirrored by MyFirstRecord.co.uk with framed vinyl gift sales increasing every year since its launch in 2011.”

The vinyl revival has been encouraged by the annual Record Store Day, which started nine years ago as a means of supporting independent music retailers. This year’s event takes place on Saturday 16th April and sees record shops around the UK stocking thousands of one-off records. There will be vinyl releases from artists including Justin Bieber, Abba, David Bowie, Alan Partridge, Foals, Chase & Status and the Dead Kennedys.

Led Zeppelin may need a Stair Lift to Heaven

When the time comes for them to depart this mortal coil members of Led Zeppelin may need a Stair Lift to Heaven as they may not have access to their Stairway to Heaven. But not necessarily because of infirmity brought on by old age!!

A court in the US has ruled Led Zeppelin founders Robert Plant and Jimmy Page must face trial in a dispute regarding copyright of the song Stairway to Heaven.led zeppelin stairway to heaven

A Los Angeles district judge said there were enough similarities between the song and an instrumental by the band Spirit to let a jury decide. The trial has been scheduled for 10 May.

The copyright infringement action has been brought by Michael Skidmore, a trustee for the late Spirit guitarist Randy Wolfe, who played on the same bill as Led Zeppelin in the late 1960s, and claims he should be given credit as a co songwriter on Stairway to Heaven.

Led Zeppelin guitarist Jimmy Page and lead singer Robert Plant are reputed to have written the rock classic Stairway to Heaven in a remote cottage in Wales. Michael Skidmore has claimed Stairway to Heaven was created after the as Led Zeppelin heard Spirit perform the instrumental Taurus while the bands toured together in 1968 and 1969.

US district judge Gary Klausner said a jury could find “substantial” similarity between the first two minutes of Stairway to Heaven and Taurus, explaining: “While it is true that a descending chromatic four-chord progression is a common convention that abounds in the music industry, the similarities here transcend this core structure. What remains is a subjective assessment of the ‘concept and feel’ of two works… a task no more suitable for a judge than for a jury.”
